Reel Causes partners with VIFF to present The Whale and the Raven

Join Reel Causes at the Vancouver International Film Festival. Our community partner film is the NFB’s The Whale and the Raven.

On the otherwise uninhabited Gil Island, just off the northwest coast of BC, the sound of waves lapping and ravens cawing is punctuated by the haunting whale calls emanating from a network of loudspeakers. Drawn to the rich food sources and quiet waters, humpback whales, pods of orca, fin whales, and porpoises eat, play, and raise their young here.

Journeying into BC’s Great Bear Rainforest, German documentarian and cultural anthropologist Mirjam Leuze investigates the potential impact of a liquefied natural gas exporting plant and increased tanker traffic on this stunning ecosystem. Not only are we introduced to the remarkable people who call this place home and oppose the plant’s construction, including whale researchers Hermann Meuter and Janie Wray and elders of the Gitga’at First Nation, but also the humpbacks, orcas, and porpoises who use the Kitimat fjord system as a feeding- and playground.

VIFF runs from September 26th to October 11th. The Whale and the Raven screens on Friday, October 4th at 9th and on Sunday, October 6th at 4pm.
