An Evening for the Environment – in support of Ecojustice
May 20, 2015
Snowboard and surf culture meets environmental activism as we bring together Ecojustice and the screening of the locally made gem, Northern Grease, for our next event.
Part snowboard and surf adventure, part wild road trip, part investigative journalism, Northern Grease follows the Beyond Boarding gang on their 6-month odyssey through BC and the Alberta oil patch in their home-converted vegetable oil-fueled bus. On the way, they bring new awareness of our changing ecological and social landscapes.
Come learn more about Ecojustice’s work as legal defenders of Canada’s environment, championing meaningful environmental change, and join us in conversation with the filmmakers and Ecojustice after the film.

Running time: 75 minutes
Northern Grease follows a group of self-described “young, hairy Dudes” on their 6-month, 5,200 kilometer adventure in their vegetable oil powered bus in search of snow, surf, and insights into the industrial, economic and social changes taking place in northern BC and Alberta. Their journey juxtaposes the beauty of snow-covered mountains and remote coastlines with shocking environmental changes wrought by large-scale energy projects in pristine areas of western Canada, and chronicles their mission to understand Canadian resource extraction.
The young filmmakers visit industrial towns, meet community members involved with and affected by resource extraction, and learn about some of the problems presented by practices such as fracking and coalbed methane processing. They find a complex and disturbing landscape, against which environmental stewardship is threatened by misinformation and biased marketing. Along the way, the boys spend time with people who, using alternative and renewable enregy sources, lead lifestyles that present possible solutions.
Northern grease tells a story of awareness, social activism, and forward thinking, against a backdrop of our country’s beautiful wilderness and fascinating people.

As Canada’s only national environmental law charity, Ecojustice is leading the legal fight for a brighter environmental future.
Ecojustice’s origins lie in the wake of the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster. While environmentalists in the United States were already successfully using the courts to force governments and corporations to protect the environment, environmental law was still a novel concept here at home. Canada needed an independent organization that could go to court to stand up for people and the planet. With that in mind, Ecojustice opened its doors in 1990.
Since then, Ecojustice lawyers have represented hundreds of grassroots groups, First Nations, environmental organizations and ordinary Canadians on the frontlines of the fight for environmental justice. Together, Ecojustice and their clients have saved old-growth forests, restricted the use of harmful pesticides and forced polluters to pay to clean up environmental damage.
